Congressman Bennie Thompson to visit Gary for tour, fundraiser for Sen. Eddie Melton

GARY (July 24, 2023) – Democratic nominee for Mayor of Gary Sen. Eddie Melton and his team announced today U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district) will visit Gary on Tuesday, Jul. 25, joining Melton for a tour of the city and as a guest speaker for a fundraiser on behalf of Melton’s mayoral campaign.

“I am honored and deeply humbled to have Congressman Bennie Thompson join us in Gary,” Sen. Melton said. “His remarkable legacy of principled leadership and tireless advocacy for the American people resonates deeply with our shared mission to empower every citizen of Gary and build a thriving community where each person has an opportunity to succeed.”

Rep. Thompson is the longest-serving African American elected official in the State of Mississippi, was selected as the first-ever Democratic Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee by his congressional colleagues and is Chairman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.

Rep. Thomson’s tour of Gary will include stops at Buffington Harbor, South Gary and Downtown Gary. The campaign fundraiser will offer attendees an opportunity to connect with both Melton and Rep. Thompson, learn more about their vision for Gary’s future and actively contribute to the campaign’s

momentum.

“Congressman Thompson’s visit provides a concrete example of our campaign’s commitment to strengthening Gary’s federal relationships, highlighting areas throughout Gary that are prime for investment and working strategically to place Gary on a national stage,” Sen. Melton added. The fundraiser will take place in the Marquette Park Pavilion. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event is scheduled to run from 5:30-8 p.m. The minimum donation to attend is $500.
