Mayor-Elect Melton responds to sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel Corporation

GARY, IN  —  As Mayor-Elect of Gary, Indiana, I have been closely monitoring the situation since the announcement of U.S. Steel’s potential sale this summer. I received a call from U.S. Steel representatives early this morning regarding the transaction with Nippon Steel Corporation.

U.S. Steel is a vital employer and a significant contributor to our local economy. It is my hope that this deal not only benefits the corporation, but the employees and the greater Gary region. As the incoming mayor of our great city, I am committed to communicating with Nippon Steel about the significant role that U.S. Steel’s Gary Works plant has played over their 100 years in existence.

As my administration works toward improving the quality of life for the citizens of Gary, I also want Nippon Steel to be aware of the historical challenges we’ve faced over the many years. These issues include the decline in local property taxes contributions and the legacy environmental issues that have impacted our air, land and water. It is important that the leadership at Nippon is aware of the community concerns as they shape the future.

I eagerly anticipate meeting with the new owners of U.S. Steel and discussing ways we can collaborate. This could mark the beginning of a new chapter, fostering collaboration between the City of Gary and our largest corporation to address longstanding issues.
