Today, the Eddie Melton for Mayor campaign announced the public endorsement of the United Steelworkers District 7 for Sen. Eddie Melton’s mayoral candidacy in Gary.
“I’m grateful for the contributions the Steelworkers have made and continue to make to our city, and I’m proud to share their endorsement of my candidacy for mayor of Gary,” said Sen. Eddie Melton. “Gary’s rich history in the steel industry has set us apart, and I believe our continued support and partnership with the United Steelworkers will benefit Gary for decades to come.”
In a letter signed by Director Michael Millsap, the United Steelworkers District 7 noted, “Our union endorses candidates based on voting records, in-person interviews, political platforms and questionnaires. We endorse only those candidates who share in our ideals in regard to labor unions, international trade, workers’ rights, job safety, affordable healthcare, retirement security, quality public education for our children and much more.”
The United Steelworkers District 7 represent members across Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. Their support of Eddie Melton for Mayor of Gary joins a growing list of public endorsements including Gary Fraternal Order of Police 61, Gary Firefighters Union Local 359, Gary Teachers Union Local 4, Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters, United Steelworkers Local 1066, Unite Here Local 1 (NWI’s Casino Workers), and The Jacksons.
